A Note from Dr Janin
Our biography is a journey through the stages and the changes of life. We tend to think about age categories as periods of 10 years. But scientific and spiritual research shows that our life’s journey is subdivided in 7-year cycles. Each cycle holds distinct challenges and opportunities to acquire new qualities as we grow. I wrote this book after many requests from clients, who wanted some insights into biographical coaching and real-life examples. These, I weave together, with selected examples from both my homelands: SA and Belgium.

Reviews
A briljant book, written by a sociologist with a high level of empathy and feeling for helping people. The book’s real life examples are drawn clearly from the author’s context: Belgium and South Africa. Read it to learn more about yourself and of others.
I would recommend this book to anybody between the ages of 18-100. The author has used a lifetime of coaching experience on the pages. Read it in one sitting.
Dr Janin performed retrospective analysis of who I am and helped me to become conscious of my innermost thoughts. She enabled me to see things clearly by revealing my future through the recollections of memories of my old self. Removing the mental fog I’ve been experiencing. “Everything is connected,” she said, referring to the past, present, and future. Dr Janin has understood my inner self in a way that nobody has done before.
Congratulations again – this is a marvelous contribution to the inquiry about life phases.
Dr Janin Vansteenkiste takes you on a journey through live stages. The book is written in language the ordinary reader can engage with easily, filled with short retellings of things happening in people’s lives as illustrations. Yet, it is clearly backed by good sociological academic research. Well worth the read and a re-read. Inspiring and motivating.
Ek het natuurlik dadelik na die afdeling vir 63+ geblaai. Ek het nog net geloer, maar ek is gek oor jou lewensfilosofie. Baie, baie dankie vir die boek! Dis ‘n wonderlike geskenk. Ek sien uit daarna om veel meer te doen as loer en blaai Boonop gaan dit my met my skryfwerk ook help. Dis moeilik om te onthou hoe mens byvoorbeeld in jou 30’s was.☺ Nou het ek die regte agtergrond vir my jonger karakters.
Viva Academia
The landscape of South African universities is in turmoil. Some institutions have already lost their credibility. Others must clean up their governing practices. Their organisational sustainability is at stake. Student grant management has sunk into a quagmire…
Ongoing and renewed student protests are but one signifier, but an important one, of what is going wrong.
Dr Janin looks back at her involvement in the Belgian student politics that were part of the ’68 social movement and observes South Africa’s most recent student protests.
Comparing these different times and situations motivates her plea to reinforce the engagement power of universities. Engagement within, with student-centred learning and development and with fair workloads for dedicated academics. Engagement without, with curricula and research addressing local and global solutions. As crucibles of knowledge-based leadership, universities have a unique social charter to fulfil. Changing times and changing challenges call for changing practices.
Tried and tested approaches combined with new initiatives all can contribute to open mindsets and a vibrant higher learning experience – the essence of academia.
Taking an alive academia into the future begins with listening to the voices of the youth.
